Annie Penn Hospital, The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Wesley Long and Women’s Hospital collectively have been named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for cardiac care, pulmonary care, joint replacement and spine surgery. This is according to a national study by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals.

The Cone Health hospitals are the only hospitals in North Carolina to receive the America’s 100 Best Hospitals Awards for Joint Replacement and Spine Surgery in 2019, as well as the only hospitals in the state to receive the Orthopedics Surgery Excellence Award for two consecutive years (2018-2019).

“We deliver some of the best health care in the nation. What I find most gratifying is that we deliver that care to our friends, neighbors and family members right here in the communities we live in,” says Cone Health’s Chief Physician Executive Bruce Swords, MD, PhD.

From 2015 through 2017, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement Award have, on average, a 63% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award. Additionally, from 2015 through 2017, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Spine Surgery Award have, on average, a 48.2 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*

Cone Health1 was also recognized for the following clinical achievements:

  • 2019 Cardiac Care Excellence Award™
  • Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award™ for 2 years in a row (2018-2019)
  • Joint Replacement Excellence Award™ for 2 years in a row (2018-2019)

  • Five Star Distinctions in Total Knee Replacement, Total Hip Replacement, Spinal Fusion Surgery, Treatment of Stroke, Sepsis, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Pneumonia and Heart Failure.

“Hospitals that have achieved the Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals Awards for Cardiac Care, Pulmonary Care, Joint Replacement and Spine Surgery have proven their dedication to quality care and exceptional outcomes,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. “Consumers should consider hospital quality when navigating their care journeys, and these recognitions distinguish Cone Health1 in the marketplace.”

Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at almost 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions, as well as tracking outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states and the District of Columbia.*

These achievements are part of findings released today in the Healthgrades 2019 Report to the Nation. The new report demonstrates how clinical performance differs dramatically between hospitals nationally, regionally and at the local level, and the impact that this variation has on health outcomes.
