Cone Health Improves Stroke Care in High Point
Cone Health brings care for stroke, seizures and other neurological disorders to its MedCenter complex.
Cone Health is making advanced care available in High Point to people with strokes, seizures, headache disorders and other neurological issues. The emergency department at MedCenter High Point is using teleneurology to connect people with doctors who can quickly diagnose neurological concerns.
Previously, those requiring urgent neurologic care were often transferred to hospitals for diagnosis and treatment. A shortage of neurologists means most emergency departments do not have these specialists on hand 24/7. By using teleneurology, neurologic issues can be identified and treated more quickly, and unnecessary transfers and their costs prevented. The service is especially important in stroke- and seizure-related emergencies where time is critical.
“We see amazing results when we catch and treat strokes early,” says Jeremy Deaver, system director of neurology operations, Cone Health. “This teleneurology service allows a neurologist to see and interact with the patient. They can view and document charts, review brain scans, and either transfer the patient to a comprehensive stroke center such as the one at Moses Cone Hospital or reassure the patient they can get the care they need where they are.”
In addition to neurologists, registered nurses use the video link when time is critical, such as with stroke patients. They provide helpful guidance to ensure treatment is fast and safe.
Cone Health expects people in the High Point area to use the teleneurology system about 100 times in the first year. This service is part of Cone Health Neurosciences, and is a partnership with Atrium Health & TeleSpecialists.
The emergency department at Cone Health MedCenter High Point is at 2630 Willard Dairy Road in High Point and can be reached at (336) 884-3777.
