If It Hurts When You Move It, Come to Cone Health

Three Cone Health hospitals have been named to Healthgrades’ America’s 100 Best lists for orthopedic, joint replacement and spine surgery.

Greensboro–During Healthgrades’ 3-year period, nearly 2.2 million inpatient total knee, total hip, spinal fusion, and back and neck surgeries were performed in the U.S.* And several Cone Health hospitals are the only places in North Carolina excelling at the highest level in all 3.

Joint Replacement Award

Healthgrades has named Annie Penn Hospital, The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital and Wesley Long Hospital the only hospitals in North Carolina to receive all 3 America’s 100 Best Orthopedic Achievements: America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement, Orthopedic Surgery and Spine Surgery list for 2020. The health network was also recognized for excellence in pulmonary care, sepsis care, heart failure and pneumonia.

Healthgrades is the leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide in 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.

Orthopedic Surgery Award

“We have long understood that teamwork makes a successful surgery,” says Bruce Swords, MD, PhD, chief physician executive, Cone Health. “When everyone works together, from the physician who first hears, ‘my knee hurts,’ to the nurses who care for patients during and after surgery, to the physical therapist in the weeks after surgery, great things happen. For the patient that means fewer complications and a quicker return to a pain-free life.”

From 2016 through 2018, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement Award have, on average, a 62.5% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.

Spine Surgery Award

“As consumers navigate their health, it is important to consider a number of factors, including hospital quality, before deciding where to access care,” said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer, Healthgrades. “Healthgrades’ America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Surgery, Joint Replacement and Spine Surgery recognizes those hospitals that have proven their dedication to quality are and exceptional outcomes over time and we applaud their efforts and achievement.”

Annie Penn Hospital, Moses Cone Hospital and Wesley Long Hospital were also awarded the following:

  • Pulmonary Care Excellence Award™ for 6 year in a row (2015-2020)
