Inside the Area’s Only COVID-19 Hospital

How a place built in a time of fear, turned into a place of hope.

Everyone remembers the early days of the coronavirus pandemic. Will there be enough negative pressure rooms and ventilators for patients? Can you even find the masks, gloves and gowns to keep caregivers safe? And where will you put all the patients?

In its search for answers, Cone Health turned its attention to the former Women’s Hospital. It closed a few weeks earlier. Could a place dedicated to bringing new life into the world, become a place dedicated to keeping life from ending too soon?

An 82-person team was organized to look at the possibilities. In 28 days, Green Valley campus opened with a volunteer staff ready to face the biggest health crisis of our lifetime. This is their story.

More than 1,100 people have been cared for at Cone Health Green Valley campus. Green Valley campus owes much of its success to staying abreast of the latest developments in COVID-19 care such as heated high-flow oxygen. The staff has daily educational sessions to make sure the latest techniques and information benefits patients as soon as possible.
