Cone Health and the Public Art Endowment Seek Large Outdoor Sculpture

The $300,000 work of art will be placed at The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.

Cone Health and the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro’s (CFGG) Public Art Endowment (PAE) are commissioning an iconic piece of art. The work will go in a  large circular area between the Cone Health Heart & Vascular Center and the Women’s & Children’s Center at Moses Cone Hospital. The budget is $300,000 for the project with $75,000 from PAE and $225,000 to be raised by Cone Health Philanthropy. Circular Area for Sculpture

The two entities are looking for an artist to create a work that is site-specific, thought-provoking, hope-filled and visually engaging. It must connect with visitors and patients. In recent years, Cone Health has put emphasis on placing works of art in its buildings, and the PAE has been changing Greensboro’s public landscape with art projects since 2008.

“We are so pleased with the relationship we have with Cone Health and their willingness to partner with us on this exciting new project,” said Walker Sanders, CFGG’s president. “Our expectation is that this will be an outstanding piece of art for the entire community to enjoy.”

“Health care is a journey for our patients that involves a variety of experiences, emotions and outcomes. Art can play a vital role in that journey, providing inspiration, hope and compassion during some of the most important moments in our patients’ lives,” says Moses Cone Hospital President Preston Hammock.

The commissioning of this piece will begin via a formal request for qualifications and include visits, interviews and presentations by a select number of artists.

Community members who are not artistic types can also get involved. Cone Health and PAE are beginning a fundraising campaign to help pay for the art. Contact Cone Health Philanthropy Officer Ruth Heyd at to learn more about joining this initiative.

The goal is to have the art in place by the end of 2022.
