Cone Health CEO Stepping Down as Planned
Dr. Mary Jo Cagle to become CEO.
Cone Health Chief Executive Officer Terry Akin leaves Cone Health June 15. He announced his decision in January to leave the organization for personal reasons. As stated at that time, Dr. Mary Jo Cagle will succeed him. She becomes chief executive officer.
“On behalf of our board and all those we serve, we are profoundly grateful to Terry for his tenure, service and lasting impact,” says Cone Health Board of Trustees Chairman F. D. Hornaday. “Terry has led by example, and he has laid the foundation for Cone Health’s long-term success. He has set a bold vision to be a national leader in value-based care – and then inspired our extraordinary team to fulfill that vision by providing the very best quality care and service as cost-effectively as possible.”
Akin planned to remain with Cone Health until a pending affiliation with Sentara Healthcare was finalized. The two organizations announced earlier this week that they would remain independent. He has served as Cone Health CEO since October 2014.
Dr. Mary Jo Cagle
“Mary Jo has been with Cone Health for over a decade and guided much of the work that resulted in Cone Health’s nationally recognized performance,” adds Hornaday. "She is well respected throughout the organization, across the medical community, and statewide and nationally. She is a longtime advocate for physician leadership and diversity, equity and inclusion."
Cagle becomes the first woman and the first physician to lead the Cone Health network. She joined Cone Health in 2011 as chief quality officer.
