Artist Selected for Sculpture at The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital

The work will combine art, healing, design and architecture.

Greensboro – Internationally recognized sculptor, Cliff Garten will bring the next great piece of art to Cone Health. His work will be prominently displayed at The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in the outdoor space between the Cone Health Women’s & Children Center and the Cone Health Heart & Vascular Center. Garten was chosen from multiple artists across the country and selected by the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro’s Public Art Endowment Trustees and Cone Health stakeholders.  Cliff Garten

“When you look at Cliff’s work, you see the precision, you feel the passion, the art instantly connects with you,” says Chuck Wallington, Ph.D., chief marketing and communications officer, Cone Health. “Those are also attributes reflective of Cone Health. I can’t wait to see how our community connects with this.”

The piece will be thought-provoking, hope-filled and visually engaging. It will connect visitors and patients and create a space for healing through art.

“I’m thrilled to have the chance to go forward with this proposal, and that Cone Health and the Public Art Endowment have selected my studio to take on this important commission,” said Garten after receiving notification that he had been selected. “I’m honored to have the chance to focus on art and healing with folks in the Greensboro community. We have such a great opportunity for art to meet landscape and create a dynamic entry for Moses Cone Hospital.  I feel the wonderful energy from the community about this project.”

Garten is founder of Cliff Garten Studio in Venice, California. With a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design and a Master of Landscape Architecture with Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, he and his studio are known for creating public places that thoughtfully integrate sculpture with landscape. He also has done extensive work creating art for medical facilities, most recently the Mark Ridley Thomas Behavioral Center at the Martin Luther King Hospital in Los Angeles and the Laurance S. Rockefeller Outpatient Pavilion at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, New York.

The art is commissioned through the generosity of the Public Art Endowment and philanthropic support. “The Community Foundation’s Public Art Endowment is thrilled to be collaborating with Cone Health on this project and to be able to work with world-renowned artist, Cliff Garten, to create a signature artwork for Moses Cone Hospital,” says Walker Sanders, president, Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro.

A public unveiling will be in early 2024.
