Cone Health Economist Appointed to Economics Board at UNCG
Monica Schmidt sees her appointment as a first step in creating opportunities for both organizations to improve patient care.
Greensboro – Monica Schmidt, PhD, MPH, executive director of Health Economics at Cone Health, has been appointed to the economics advisory board at the UNC Greensboro Bryan School of Business and Economics.
As a board member, Schmidt will help build connections and infrastructure connecting Cone Health to UNCG's Economics Department, opening the door to an ongoing and mutually beneficial relationship.
"I'm very excited," says Schmidt. "We need a pipeline of knowledgeable graduates to start filing up health economics at Cone Health. Our department is only going to grow over time and it's going to grow because of value-based care. We need people who can evaluate programs and payment models and tell us if we're doing the right things for our patients, making sure we're providing the best care possible."
As a lifelong North Carolinian and member of the Greensboro community, Schmidt has a unique perspective on the current state of health care and what it all means for residents in the Triad.
"We have a lot of projects planned that can help us get care to people where they want it and when they want it. Cone Health is such a great testing ground for innovative programs and evaluations; we believe we could offer valuable information. Our goal is to expand research into the larger UNCG Medicaid statewide database to inform what works to improve care," Schmidt says. "This could be the missing piece that creates just a really robust program between Cone Health and UNCG – especially in health services research."
As a result of the partnership, Schmidt sees Cone Health as a key player in helping students move into the workplace ready to transform health care.
