Cone Health MedCenter Asheboro Opens
The facility opens to patients Monday.
Greensboro – Some of the latest tools in health care along with a healthy dose of convenience are in Asheboro. A ribbon cutting was held for the $72 million Cone Health MedCenter Asheboro this morning. The facility sits on a 63-acre site at 1319 Spero Road in the Zoo City.
“For decades, many people in Randolph County have traveled to Greensboro for care. With MedCenter Asheboro, much of that care comes to them,” says Cone Health President and CEO Dr. Mary Jo Cagle. “When you look at this investment and our sponsorship in the ZooCity Sports Complex, it’s clear that Cone Health is very much a part of this community.”

The 51,500 sq. ft. MedCenter Asheboro features an urgent care, primary care, comprehensive cancer center and a pharmacy. One major service is Cone Health Cancer Center at MedCenter Asheboro. The comprehensive cancer center means people can receive cancer treatments without having to leave the county.
The centerpiece is a $4 million linear accelerator. The device provides radiation treatments with submillimeter accuracy. When combined with equipment ensuring the patient is perfectly positioned, it provides the highest levels of safety, accuracy, and treatment quality. The accelerator is housed in a room made of a special high-density concrete that is 6 ½ feet thick in some places.
Likewise, the imaging center houses a CT scanner that can take an image of the heart in a single beat. People previously had to leave the county to get the sort of tests the device can do.
“This beautiful facility brings convenient, high-quality health care to this very vibrant, growing part of the Piedmont,” says Cone Health Vice President of Oncology and Vice President of Southern Region Skip Hislop. “Cone Health wants to bring more services closer to where people live. This facility showcases that intent.”
Patients seeing a provider, getting treatment or receiving a scan can even pick up medications on their way out through the onsite pharmacy.
Primary care opens in December with imaging services coming later.
MedCenter Asheboro was designed with a sharp focus on patient experience. A life-sized mockup of parts of the cancer center and pharmacy was built in Greensboro. Team members walked through those areas offering suggestions about everything from placement of equipment to sight lines to patients.
Pottery
MedCenter Asheboro was designed with input from community members to be an integral part of the community it serves. With the support of an anonymous donor, it contains 86 pieces of art from the area. These include paintings, photographs, mixed media, textiles, and pottery. There is even a quilt produced by a local quilters group.
Outside the building are works from three Randolph County potters. Joseph Sand and Kate Waltman created striking large-scale pots viewable from the cancer center. Master potter Ben Owen III provided a beautiful turquoise blue pot that is also viewable from the cancer center as well as a vessel of similar size and color that graces the cancer center entrance.
