130+ Rockingham County Residents on Their Way to Building a Better You

Attendees at the Cone Health event received free health screenings and met with 40+ community partners.

Greensboro- Cone Health’s Center for Health Equity brought its signature “Building a Better You” event to Rockingham County for the first time on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Rockingham Community College. The interactive wellness event welcomed more than 130 attendees.

Building a Better You: Rockingham marked a milestone in Cone Health’s commitment to expanding access to care and resources in rural communities. Nearly 40% of attendees received free health screenings, a 12% uptick in participation when compared to “Building a Better You” events held earlier this year in Alamance and Guilford counties. Building a Better You Rockingham Event

Attendees also had an opportunity to meet with more than 40 community partners, such as Gene Connect and N.C. A&T's CIHDER (Center of Excellence for Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research) offering services for children, women, men, and older adults. From line dancing and face painting to an interactive photo booth, the event blended fun with education to help families build healthier lives.

“I was excited to hear that the event was going to be in Rockingham County, and I knew I wanted to come out to see what they had to offer. I learned about the event from Sagewell Fitness Center in Cone Health and I was very pleased with the turnout as the exhibitors were knowledgeable and the staff were friendly and hospitable,” said attendee Marcia McGrory.

Another Rockingham community member, Dr. L. Denise White shared, “The Building a Better You event went several steps beyond my expectations of what I envisioned it would be as it was very inclusive with children’s activities, autism and Alzheimer’s diagnosis and even research studies.”

“Building a Better You” is part of Cone Health’s C.A.T.C.H. 5-in-5 initiative—Collaborative Actions Towards Community Health—which aims to close the life expectancy gap by five years in five years. In the Cone Health service area, people living just a few miles apart can face up to a 15-year difference in life expectancy. These gaps are driven by unequal access to healthy food, housing, transportation, education and preventive care.

To address this, Cone Health is investing $150 million in mobile clinics, wellness hubs, and partnerships across Alamance, Forsyth, Randolph, Rockingham and Guilford counties. Through free screenings, chronic disease education, mental health support, and research opportunities, the C.A.T.C.H. 5 in 5 initiative empowers communities to live longer, healthier lives.
