Cone Health and UNC-Chapel Hill Forge Partnership to Advance Public Health and Value-Based Care

New agreement creates a student pipeline for real-world experience on the leading edge of health care.

Greensboro – Cone Health and the UNC-Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health join forces to drive innovation in value-based care, research, education and workforce development. The two organizations will formalize their collaboration with a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday, Nov 4, from 8 a.m. to noon at Union Square in Greensboro.

This partnership establishes a pipeline for students from Gillings to gain hands-on experience at Cone Health, working as biostatisticians, health policy experts and implementation specialists. Their work will help Cone Health better understand the needs of the communities it serves and apply those insights to improve the health of the Piedmont.

“This agreement is more than a partnership — it’s a shared commitment to healthier communities,” says Dr. Angelo Sinopoli, Cone Health Executive Vice President of Value-Based Care. “By welcoming students into our system, we’re investing in the future of public health and accelerating our transition to value-based care.”

Students will contribute to Cone Health’s efforts to:

  • Analyze community health data to identify gaps and opportunities to improve health.
  • Support implementation of value-based care models.
  • Collaborate on research that informs policy and practice.
  • Strengthen the local health care workforce.

“Gillings students bring fresh perspectives and rigorous training,” says Dr. Nancy Messonnier, Dean of the Gillings School. “This partnership gives them the opportunity to apply their skills in real-world settings while making a meaningful impact.”

The collaboration reflects Cone Health’s ongoing commitment to community-focused care and its role as a learning health system.
