Not the Day They Planned. But a Wedding Day They Won’t Forget

An unexpected trip to the hospital turned into two of life’s biggest moments.

Greensboro resident Jasmine Smith woke Wednesday morning when her water broke. She and her boyfriend rushed to Cone Health Women's & Children's Center at Moses Cone Hospital. This wasn’t the day they had planned. They had planned on getting married.

When they mentioned that to team members at the Women’s and Children’s Center, they sprang into action. One of the nurses called her pastor, Rev. Sharon Lee of Lowes United Methodist Church. Calling it an honor, Lee agreed to perform the ceremony. Staff tracked down a cake, flowers for the flower girl and refreshments for the reception in the hospital family room.

“Next thing you know, it was the talk of the hospital,” says Latroy Parker, Jasmine’s proud husband. Jasmine, fighting through the occasional contraction, eased her way to Latroy’s side. He and Rev. Lee were standing in front of Corous, a large heart-shaped artwork not far from the Women’s & Children’s Center door.

“It was the perfect setting, the perfect moment. I appreciate everybody for what they did., adds Parker.

This wasn’t the day that labor and delivery staff expected either. But they too will remember it for a long, long time. “We are such a warm and caring staff. We are so happy just to be part of this,” says labor and delivery nurse Christy Goodman.

Summer Reign Parker was born after 11 that night.
