Randolph County Art Lands Cone Health an International Design Award

The innovative way the works of local artisans were selected and used at Cone Health MedCenter Asheboro earns international recognition.

Greensboro-- Cone Health MedCenter Asheboro received the European Healthcare Award of Interior Design and the Arts award at the organization’s annual conference in London. Competing against top designs from Singapore and London, MedCenter Asheboro stood out for the way 86 pieces of community art are used throughout the facility.

The award highlights Cone Health’s objective of being part of the community and weaving local art into the patient and customer experience. Cone Health believes that art can play a calming, healing role in health care. It also understands that local art deepens the ties between Cone Health and the people it serves.

“I can’t tell you how many people became so excited seeing the work of a potter they recognized or the color of a piece that reminds them of the serving plate they use for Sunday dinner,” recalls Cone Health Philanthropy Engagement & Annual Giving Officer, Keyshia Gray. “That shows that, yes, this is a health care facility, but it is the community’s health care facility.”

The judges were impressed by the way paintings, photographs, mixed-media works, textiles and pottery were selected and used in the project.

  • Community members and MedCenter Asheboro staff defined the colors, textures and themes that would be calming, relaxing and give hope.
  • The Randolph Arts Guild worked with Cone Health Philanthropy to find or commission the art.
  • The architects at Perkins&Will created unique spaces showcasing the art both inside and outside of the MedCenter.

The European Healthcare Design conference is a prestigious event bringing together leaders and innovators in health care design from across Europe and beyond. This award is a testament to the hard work and creativity of the design experience team and the philanthropic efforts that supported this project.
