Moses Cone Hospital Named One of Nation’s Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals

If all hospitals offered cardiovascular care at the level of the top 50, roughly 6,400 additional lives could be saved, according to a Fortune/IBM Watson Health study.

GREENSBORO – The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital is among the nation’s Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals for 2022, according to a study by Fortune and IBM Watson Health. The study consisted of 951 facilities offering heart and vascular care.

The award is especially meaningful as Moses Cone Hospital continues to serve a state in which one in five adults dies from heart disease each year, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

Moses Cone Hospital’s 2022 Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals award marks the hospital’s third such honor, with the other two coming in 2018 and 2019.

“Our heart and vascular physicians and care teams at Moses Cone Hospital are national leaders in both the quality of care they provide and the innovation they advance,” said Preston Hammock, president, The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. “We’re proud to again be recognized as one of the nation’s best heart and vascular care centers because it means we’re achieving great outcomes for our patients who will always be our top priority.”

The Fortune/IBM Watson Health study recognizes hospitals for positive clinical results, efficiency, financial performance and patient experience. It found that if all hospitals offered heart and vascular care at the level of the top 50, roughly 6,400 additional lives and $1.4 billion could be saved, and 5,000 additional bypass and angioplasty patients could be complication-free.

“Hospitals are constantly working to improve clinical and operational performance, and the exceptional organizations on this list demonstrate the standard for top performing cardiac care,” said Ekta Punwani, 100 Top Hospitals Program Leader, IBM Watson Health. “Their benchmarks serve as a real-world checkpoint for cardiovascular care across the U.S.”

The Fortune/IBM Watson Health study is designed to identify impartial, actionable, and attainable benchmarks for hospital and clinical leaders as they work to raise their own organizations’ standards of performance in cardiac care. The annual report highlights the top-performing cardiovascular hospitals in the U.S. based on a balanced scorecard of publicly available clinical, operational, and patient satisfaction metrics and data.

IBM Watson Health ranks hospitals according to their government Medicare ID numbers. Annie Penn Hospital, Cone Health Behavioral Health Hospital, The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital and Wesley Long Hospital share the same number. Their combined performance is listed as The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, with the majority of cardiovascular care provided at Moses Cone Hospital as well as at Annie Penn Hospital. Alamance Regional Medical Center has its own reporting number and received a Platinum Performance Achievement Award for the treatment of heart attacks by the American College of Cardiology in 2021.
