**All Internal candidates must submit a manager reference in addition to the three clinical references. Have them use the internal reference form [Word doc]and then email them to Nursing Recruitment.

Academy of Psychiatric Nursing

The Academy of Psychiatric Nursing is a program to support new graduate nurses as they become competent in Behavioral Health and Substance Abuse Nurses.

More than an orientation program, the academy uses interactive learning strategies, core curriculum classes, and a variety of  clinical experiences to improve the nurse’s assessment, critical-thinking skills  and people skills.

Who will participate?

New graduate registered nurses who are interested in working in a psychiatric  inpatient unit will be hired into the Academy of Psychiatric Nursing.

How does the academy work?

Each week includes 20 hours of academy activities and 20 hours of clinical time. 

Core classes in Psychiatric Nursing content provides continuing education hours.

Academy nurses rotate throughout their clinical experience to the:

  • Assessment department
  • Adult Unit
  • Child/Adolescent Unit
  • Psych ED

Academy participants will complete CIRT Training Academy nurses work with a nurse preceptor (coach) during each clinical rotation

What happens at the end of the academy?

Nurses completing the Academy of Psychiatric Nursing will apply the Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing concepts. (The Concepts are The Recovery model, Motivational Interviewing Concept, Person Centered Treatment Planning, etc) Academy nurses will begin their careers with a strong background in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing.

Ongoing support will continue through the Staff Education office at BHH and workshops on professionalism and paid time away from the hospital engaging in fun and rejuvenating activities with peers and a mentor leader.
