Shane Hudnall

Shane Hudnall, MD, FAMSSM, Program Director Cone Health Sports Medicine Fellowship, Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, UNC-Chapel Hill

Dr. Hudnall’s love for sports is a big reason why he pursued a career in sports medicine. He is a big fan of the University of Notre Dame, the Chicago Cubs, and the Indianapolis Colts. Dr. Hudnall has a special interest in sports injuries and chronic tendinopathies but enjoys the variety that comes with practicing in the field of sports medicine. He is an active member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine serving on the Fellowship and Practice and Policy Committees. He currently serves as a team physician for Guilford College and the Greensboro Grasshoppers. 

He enjoys spending time with his wife and their two children. His hobbies include running, watching and playing sports, movies, sketch and stand-up comedy, and coaching youth sports. 

Bret Jacobs

Bret Jacobs, DO, CAQSM, FAMSSM, Associate Program Director Cone Health Sports Medicine Fellowship, Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, UNC-Chapel Hill

Bret Jacobs, DO, specializes in sports medicine. His professional interests include sports injuries, tendinopathy, running medicine and musculoskeletal ultrasound.

Dr. Jacobs takes care of athletes of all ages and ability levels with a focus on returning patients back to the activities they enjoy. He has extensive experience with professional, collegiate, high school and amateur athletes. As a sports medicine physician, he has a unique skill set to address any non-operative orthopedic and musculoskeletal needs. Using an open dialogue, he builds rapport, personalizes treatment plans and focuses on helping patients lead a healthy and active life. He is an active member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and serves on the Fellowship and Education Committees.  He currently serves as a team physician for the Greensboro Grasshoppers and the Greensboro Gargoyles.

Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife, son and dog. He is a fan of soccer and Penn State Football. His hobbies include fly fishing, fly tying, golfing and cooking.

Karl Fields

Karl B. Fields, MD, ABFM, CAQSM, Emeritus Fellowship Director of Sports Medicine, Professor of Family Medicine, University of North Carolina School of Medicine

Dr. Fields graduated from the University of Kentucky School of Medicine in 1976 and the Charlotte Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency in 1979.  After practicing in rural North Carolina for four years, he joined the Moses Cone Family Medicine Residency Program in 1984.  He completed the Faculty Development Fellowship at UNC Chapel Hill. 

He is editor for Sports Medicine topics for UpToDate.  He is a past president of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.  He has been a visiting professor in Norway, China, Chile, Italy, Australia and South Africa, and chaired the International Team Physician Course for the American College of Sports Medicine. 

Key current interests include musculoskeletal ultrasound, running injuries, diagnosis and management of foot problems and approaches to management of chronic tendinopathy.

Sara Neal, MD, ABFP, CAQSM Sports Medicine, Family Medicine Faculty Liaison, Family Medicine Program DirectorSara Neal, MD

Dr. Neal received her MD from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 1994. She completed her Family Medicine Residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in 1997 and joined the faculty of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Wake Forest University. In 2006, she completed a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Cone Health. She remained on faculty at Wake Forest University, serving as Assistant Professor and the Associate Director of the Family Medicine Residency program until 2008, when she joined the faculty at Moses Cone Hospital as Assistant Professor. In 2019 she became the Director of Family Medicine.

Dr. Neal has been the team physician for the Wake Forest Women's Field Hockey program and was elected physician member of the North Carolina Boxing Advisory Commission in 2008. Her areas of special interest include women's health and sports medicine. .

Dominic McKinley, MD, CAQSM Sports MedicineDominic McKinley, MD

Dr. McKinley received his MD from Wright State University in Ohio in 1997. He completed his Family Medicine residency and Primary Care Sports Medicine in Greensboro at the Moses Cone Hospital.  Dr. McKinley joined Guilford Orthopedics in 2001 as a Primary Care Sports Medicine Specialist.

Dr. McKinley has served as team physician for North Carolina A&T State University and Bishop McGuinness High School football for many years. Dr. McKinley has worked with Guilford College athletics programs as well as with multiple area high schools. He is a member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, the Christian Medical Association, the North Carolina Medical Society and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Bailey Meccariello, DO, CAQSM Sports MedicineBailey Meccariello

Dr. Meccariello graduated from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, Virginia Campus in 2019 and Cone Family Medicine Residency in 2022, where she served as Chief Resident. She completed her Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Cone Health in 2023. She joined Murphy Wainer Orthopedics after her graduation in 2023 as a Primary Care Sports Medicine Specialist.

Dr. Meccariello serves as a team physician for Greensboro College and local area high schools, as well as the Greensboro Grasshoppers (Minor League Baseball) and NCHSAA All-Star Week. She has previously served as team physician for the Carolina Cobras (Arena Football) and Guilford College as well and helps provide coverage for the PGA Wyndham Tournament. Dana Brooks, III, DO, CAQSM Sports MedicineDana Brooks, MD

Dr. Dana Brooks graduated medical school at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his Family Medicine residency at Novant Health NHRMC in Wilmington, NC, and his Sports Medicine fellowship training here at Cone Health. Dr. Brooks joined Cone Health OrthoCare in 2023 serving as their Primary Care Sports Medicine Specialist.

Dr. Brooks is the head team physician for UNC-Greensboro and Western Guilford High School. Prior to his medical training, he was involved in sports himself playing both basketball and golf at Albion College in Michigan. In his free time, Dr. Brooks enjoys spending time with his wife and son. He enjoys hiking, playing golf, surfing, working out, and is an active member at Definition Church.

Neeton Moore, BS, CMA, Practice AdministratorNeeton Moore

Mr. Moore is the practice administrator for Cone Health Sports Medicine and MedCenter High Point Sports Medicine. He earned his bachelor's degree in Public Health Education with studies in Community Health Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has been with the Cone Health system since 1996 and assists Dr McKinley and the fellowship as a medical team member for the athletes at North Carolina A&T State University. 

Neeton has worked closely with several area high school athletes who have become professional NBA and NFL players. 

Amber Chrismon, BSW, Medical Education ManagerMartha Delaney

Ms. Chrismon earned her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1999. She joined Cone Health in 2019 and transitioned into the field of medical education in 2022. Currently, she serves as the Manager of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, where she provides support in the development of future medical professionals.

In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, kayaking, reading, and spending time with family.

Additional Faculty

Several orthopedists with active sports medicine practices, subspecialty orthopedists, physiatrists and radiologists all contribute to teaching the fellows.

Primary care sports medicine physicians in the community serve as adjunct faculty who help with residency and fellowship teaching, as well as coverage of local events. These physicians include Dr. Rebecca Bassett, Dr. Tim Lockamy, Dr. Evan Corey and Dr. Zachary Smith.
