Sports Medicine Fellows

Phillip Dixon, MD
Dr. Dixon is a North Carolina native, raised in the town of Summerfield. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Prisma Health / University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. Before pursuing a fellowship, he served as a Primary Care Physician at Reidsville Primary Care.
“Sports teach life lessons, bring together people of different backgrounds, and allow us to be involved in something bigger than ourselves. They provide moments of personal achievement as well, such as running a marathon. I am excited to further my training in sports medicine and play a role in helping my patients create those moments or return to activities that bring them joy.”
Outside of medicine, Dr. Dixon enjoys spending time with his family, NC State Athletics, golfing, exploring national parks, running, and visiting Disney destinations.

Todd Dunaway, DO
I am thrilled to join the Sports Medicine Fellowship at Cone Health, where I can combine my passion for sports and medicine. Growing up in Utah, I developed a love for the outdoors and athletics, particularly soccer and football. I earned my undergraduate degree at Brigham Young University, proudly cheering for the Cougars, and completed medical school at the University of Pikeville. I trained in Family Medicine at Deaconess Hospital in Southern Indiana, where I cherished my time serving the community.
I enjoy hiking, camping, and spending time in nature. I also find woodworking a rewarding creative outlet and like staying active in the gym. In my downtime, I love reading and spending time with my family.
I’m grateful to join the Cone Health team and excited to explore the area with my family.

Andrew James, DO
I completed medical school at Campbell University and trained in Family Medicine at Novant Health, Cornelius NC. I love the field of sports medicine because it offers the unique opportunity to combine my passion for physical activity with the practice of medicine; allowing me to help individuals—from elite athletes to aging community members achieve their best health and performance. The field is dynamic and multidisciplinary, involving acute injury management, chronic pain management, disease prevention and health promotion through physical activity, which is the cornerstone of optimal health. I find joy in partnering with patients to come up with creative solutions that allow people to continue pursuing their unique passions, hopefully in a pain-free fashion.
I love all things outdoors. I grew up playing lots of basketball but now primarily enjoy golf, tennis, recreational running, hiking, fishing, and bowhunting. I also love watching all varieties of sports and am an avid Chicago Bears and NC State fan.
