Electrophysiology Services
Electrophysiologists are cardiologists specially trained in the evaluation and treatment of heart rhythm problems and their accompanying complications. An abnormal heart rate or rhythm (arrhythmia) are diagnosed and treated.
Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Care
Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is the most common type of irregular heartbeat, increasing your risk for stroke and heart failure. At Cone Health, our board-certified electrophysiologists and specialized AFib clinic deliver advanced, patient-centered AFib care to help you live better and reduce your risk of serious complications. Learn more here.
Arrhythmia Monitoring
Physicians use arrhythmia monitoring to identify the cause, location, and best treatment of abnormal heart rhythms. We are able to monitor for heart rhythm abnormalities using Holter monitors, event monitors, and implantable loop recorders.
Electrophysiology (EP) Testing
EP testing is used to diagnose arrhythmias. This is a minimally invasive procedure done in the hospital where the electrical system of the heart is evaluated using catheters placed through the blood vessels up to the heart. EP testing is used to determine which type of abnormal heart rhythm is present and to help determine the best treatment option. Arrhythmias are often treated with ablation during the same procedure.
Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA)
Pulsed field ablation (PFA) is a new, innovative, faster and safer treatment for heart rhythm problems like atrial fibrillation. Unlike older methods that use heat or extreme cold to destroy problematic heart tissue, PFA uses extremely quick bursts of electrical energy to target and treat only the heart cells causing the abnormal rhythm. Learn more about pulsed field ablation for AFib.
Pacemakers
Pacemakers are small devices implanted in patients to treat slow heart rhythms. Using electrical pulses, pacemakers prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate. Cone Health HeartCare offers traditional pacemakers as well as dual chamber leadless pacemakers, a groundbreaking new technology suitable for some patients.
Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators (ICDs)
ICDs are life saving devices that are implanted in patients that are at higher risk for having life threatening arrhythmias. Cone Health HeartCare physicians implant ICDs with leads that travel through the blood vessel and connect to the heart as well as ICDs that are completely under the skin, outside the ribcage.
WATCHMAN™ Device
The WATCHMAN™ device is a small, parachute-shaped ICD designed to reduce the risk of stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (AFib) not caused by a heart valve problem. Learn more.
Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT)
Cardiac resynchronization therapy is sometimes needed for patients who have a delay in communication between the bottom two chambers of the heart. By placing an additional lead or using recently innovated techniques that deliver the beat directly into the heart's own electrical system, a pacemaker or defibrillator is able to resynchronize the heart and allows it to work more efficiently.
Hospital Care
Cone Health HeartCare electrophysiology doctors perform procedures at Alamance Regional Medical Center and The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
There is a cardiologist on call 24/7 to respond to emergencies.
