Reidsville Man Survives Cardiac Arrest

Albert “Junior” Loye says he’s a blessed man. He suffered a cardiac arrest from a severe heart attack, but today he is back to living an active life and playing golf with his friends.

A few months back, it was touch and go. The 65-year-old was overseeing a project for his family’s tree business when he began to feel sick and overheated. While heading home to cool down and get some rest, he decided to pull in at Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville to get checked out.

Albert LoyeBy the time Loye arrived, it was clear he was in trouble. Fortunately, a CareLink critical care transport ambulance operated by Cone Health was standing by. Within minutes of his arrival, he was on his way to Cone Health Heart and Vascular Center in Greensboro.

“I was in and out, but I remember the CareLink guy saying my blood pressure was going down,” Loye says. “He called ahead to make certain the hospital elevator was ready with the doors open. They were waiting for me.”

After arriving, Loye suffered a cardiac arrest and had to be shocked four times before his heart rhythm returned and stabilized. But just 41 minutes after his arrival – and in half the time recommended by national guidelines – cardiologist Bruce Brodie, MD, was performing angioplasty to determine if Loye had a blockage. Instead, tests showed his heart attack was triggered by a blood clot from the left atrium, one of the upper chambers of the heart. He also was found to have a severely diseased aortic heart valve.

After surgery to replace the malfunctioning valve and remove the clot from his left atrium, Loye has made a full recovery. “I know today that if I hadn’t stopped at the hospital, I would have died,” he says. “I can’t say enough about Cone Health and the care I received.

“I give credit to the good Lord for putting these well-qualified people at the right place at the right time.”
