3 Quick Tips to Prevent Food Poisoning and How to Treat Yourself at Home

Food Poisoning

Food poisoning is caused by a toxin in the food that is consumed. Symptoms of food poisoning include:

  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Fever.
  • Chills.
  • Generalized weakness.
  • Generally feeling unwell.

To treat food poisoning at home, modify your diet and eat gentle, bland foods until you start to feel better. An easy diet to follow is the B.R.A.T. diet, which is a group of easy-to-digest food that includes:

  • Bananas.
  • Rice.
  • Applesauce.
  • Toast.

It’s also important to stay hydrated. Try sipping on water, eating ice chips or drinking fluids with added electrolytes to keep your level of hydration up.

The key to preventing food poisoning is making sure that your food is cooked very well. Whether you’re grilling outdoors or baking in the kitchen, practice these 3 quick tips to prevent food poisoning:

  1. Cook meats to a safe temperature.
  2. Store foods properly before and after cooking them.
  3. Be mindful of expiration dates.

If your symptoms don’t get better after a few days or if you’re feeling dehydrated, reach out to a health care provider for help.
