Safety Tips for Happy Holidays

The holiday season is in full swing! Leigha Jordan, MS, injury prevention coordinator, shares tips to keep you and your family safe as you check items off of your holiday to-do list.

  • Decorating the House: use a sturdy ladder and have someone with you; put breakable ornaments at the top of the tree and non-breakable ones at the bottom for the kids; keep candles out of reach and at least 12 inches away from anything flammable.
  • Keeping Decorations Safe: keep poisonous plants like mistletoe, holly berries and poinsettias out of reach of kids and pets; water your tree so that it does not become more likely to catch fire; turn of decorative lights when you leave the house or go to bed.
  • Giving Safe Gifts: make sure to purchase age-appropriate toys; when buying a bike, skateboard or scooter, be sure to buy the helmet, too!
