Rehabilitation Patient Discovers Benefits of Therapeutic Pilates

Therapeutic PilatesYou could say Patti Smith has faced some challenges over the years. She has had four neck surgeries for ruptured discs dating back 30 years or so, and then in 2005 she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. After working through much of this, she reluctantly retired from her 35-year nursing career a couple of years ago.

Patti did physical therapy at Cone Health Outpatient Neurorehabilitation Center and Cone Health Outpatient Rehab at Brassfield and saw her walking improve as a result. But after she graduated from those programs, it was the Pilates approach to exercise that helped her continue to make progress.

“In Pilates we learn how to engage our core muscles which helps you with the things you want to do in your everyday life”, says Patti.  She’s been doing Pilates for several months now, and she loves it.

One who has always liked to move, she’s done aerobics, step aerobics and yoga in the past, but she sings the praises of her Pilates workouts now. In Patti’s words, “you lengthen and strengthen your muscles; and you learn proper posture.” She feels stronger, her stamina is better and her back doesn’t hurt as much. Her nightly leg cramps have even lessened since she started these workouts. And her husband, who has back trouble, does them too.

Patti works with Donna Gamble, physical therapist at Cone Outpatient Rehab at Church Street. Donna leads a class every Tuesday afternoon called Therapeutic Pilates. Patti enjoys being with the other people in the class. “It’s more fun than being at home by yourself,” says Smith, “and Donna is good at working with individuals in the class who have a variety of physical challenges.”

Therapeutic Pilates takes place every Tuesday afternoon from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and costs just $15 per session. Call Donna Gamble or Jenn Paa at 336-271-4840 for more information or to register for the class.
