7 Pregnancy Nutrition Tips for Expectant Mothers

Make way! Hungry mama is coming through! Ensuring that you receive the nutrients your body needs will promote a safe pregnancy and a healthy start for your baby. Here's a quick guide to pregnancy nutrition for before and after giving birth from the Women's & Children's Center from Kate Watts, RDN.

  1. Get enough calcium by enjoying low-fat dairy foods and dark leafy greens.
  2. Eat a variety of brightly colored fruits and vegetables throughout the day.
  3. Avoid fish that are high in mercury and make sure that meats are fully cooked.
  4. Vary your proteins by including beans soy and nuts and choose whole grains that are fortified with iron and folic acid.
  5. Take a daily prenatal supplement and drink plenty of water.
  6. Reduce your caffeine intake by reducing sodas and coffee and avoid alcohol.
  7. After pregnancy, it's important to continue getting the nutrients and calories that your body needs through a healthy balanced eating plan. Keep healthy snacks nearby and ask for help with preparing and delivering meals.
