Struggling With Breastfeeding or Finding the Right OB‑GYN? How A Triad Mom Found Everything in One Team

“My son and I wouldn’t have gotten this far with breastfeeding if it weren’t for them,” says first-time mom Aaliyah Womack of her experience working with the lactation team at Cone Health MedCenter for Women’s Mom+Baby Combined Care program. Several weeks out from giving birth, Womack says she is happier than ever that she chose the program for both her and her son.

Can One Provider See Both Me and My Baby?
Yes! Parents will no longer split their care between an OB, a primary care physician and a pediatrician, but instead both the birthing parent and the baby will be seen by the same provider who will:
- Care for you during pregnancy.
- Help you deliver your baby.
- See you just days afterward for postpartum care, including mental health.
- Care for your child for up to 5 years.
“One of the main benefits is you get to know the mothers before they deliver and be supportive throughout their pregnancy,” says Victor Cresenzo, MD, a provider in the Mom+Baby Combined Care program.
Cresenzo saw Womack throughout her pregnancy and also delivered her baby boy, Khamari, in October 2025.
Will I Receive Free Breastfeeding Support?
More than likely, yes! Not only is breastfeeding support already a part of your care team, Insurance or Medicaid often covers lactation consultantions as part of the care visit at no additional cost.
“I tried to learn as much as I could about breastfeeding when I was pregnant, but you can only know so much,” Womack said.
During her follow up appointment (just days after giving birth), Womack shared her nursing concerns and the three-person lactation team joined her appointment to give her in-person support right then and there.
“They did an evaluation of his mouth to see if there was something else I couldn’t see and discovered he had both a lip and a tongue tie,” Womack says--something many moms go weeks or months without catching.
✔️ The team provided tips and encouragement at the appointment.
✔️ Scheduled a lactation consult to have more time to dig into details.
✔️ Then provided a referral to a pediatric dentist.
“I would tell any pregnant woman in the Greensboro area to be part of the Mom+Baby program,” Womack says. “Especially as a black woman, it’s so important for us to feel like you have someone in your corner – having someone to share your concerns with. We’ve often been overlooked, especially when it comes to health concerns, and this program makes sure we are well cared for and heard.”
Where Can I find Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Breastfeeding Classes or Education?
Womack found great help and collaboration at a weekly breastfeeding support group where local moms can come together to ask questions in a supportive group environment.

Meet One of the Lactation Consultants!
Jade Chiu, one of the three International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants Womack met with from the Mom+Baby Combined Care team, was inspired to pursue this line of work after her own breastfeeding experience with her two children.

She was drawn to the Mom+Baby program in particular because of its unique approach to lactation support.

“When providers encounter a patient in need of lactation support, our team is notified and if we are available right then and there, we will pop into the room to meet with the family and address their questions and concerns,” Chiu says.
Patients can also meet for in-depth, one-on-one sessions. "We are able to offer virtual consults – even prenatally, we communicate with families through MyChart and we have a lactation number patients can call to leave messages with their questions. We get back to them within one to two business days, if not sooner.”
