Your Ultimate 2025 Health Checklist

As we welcome a new year with reflection, intentions and goal-setting, many of us have our health top of mind. It can be hard to sift through the heaps of "New Year, New You" content in attempts to make a personalized wellness plan. That's why Makiera Simmons-Robinson, MD, with Cone Health Burlington Family Practice shares everything you need to know about putting together your 2025 health checklist in this 2 Your Well-Being conversation with WFMY.
Here are Dr. Simmons-Robinson's 10 tips for keeping yourself healthy:
1. Schedule Your Annual Check-up
"Think of it like a tune-up for your car," advises Dr. Simmons-Robinson. "Schedule your annual physical, or annual wellness visit if you have Medicare." If you don't already have one, find a primary care provider.
2. Address Specific Health Concerns
-
Family History: If you have a family history of conditions like breast or prostate cancer, heart disease or diabetes, discuss necessary screenings (mammograms, PSA tests, etc.) with your provider.
-
Essential Lab Work: Get those crucial blood tests – kidney and liver function, metabolic panels, and complete blood cell counts – to establish a baseline for your health.
3. Stay Up-to-Date on Vaccinations
"Knowing your vaccine status is key," says Dr. Simmons-Robinson. Ask your provider for a copy of your records and ensure you're up-to-date on vaccinations like flu, COVID-19, pneumonia, and shingles (especially if you're over 50).
4. Prioritize Exercise and Nutrition
- Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week. Find activities you enjoy, whether it's brisk walking, dancing, or swimming. During the month of January, you can receive 50% off your enrollment fee at Sagewell Health & Fitness.
- Focus on adding healthy habits to your diet, such as increasing your water intake and incorporating more vegetables into your meals. Learn more about nutrition counseling here.
5. Nurture Your Mental Well-being
-
Mindfulness: Dedicate 30 minutes each day for quiet reflection and introspection.
-
Engage in Enjoyable Activities: Schedule time for hobbies and activities that bring you joy and relaxation.
-
Seek Professional Support: If you're struggling with anxiety, depression, or other mental health concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to a therapist or counselor.
6. Prevent Seasonal Illnesses:
The flu shot is a must! Stay up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations and consider the RSV vaccine if you're 60 or older. Visit a Cone Health Community Pharmacy near you.
7. Address Unhealthy Habits:
If you smoke, vape, or use other tobacco products, this year is the time to quit. Dr. Simmons-Robinson emphasizes that this is one of the most impactful steps you can take to improve your overall health. Your provider can help you make a plan to quit. 8. Don't Forget Routine Care:
Schedule regular check-ups with your dentist and eye doctor.
9. Utilize Technology:
Wearable devices and health apps can be valuable tools for tracking your progress. Use them to monitor your steps, heart rate, blood pressure, and other health metrics.
10. Start Small and Stay Consistent:
"Invest in a blood pressure monitor today," suggests Dr. Simmons-Robinson. "Start with small, achievable goals to avoid feeling overwhelmed."
